To-Do List
Semi-Automatic Rifle and Shotgun Ban
There is no justification for the ownership of a semi-automatic rifle or shotgun, which are necessary neither for hunting nor for self-defense. This type of weapon belongs solely in the military or a militia "well-regulated" by the government rather than in the hands of a private citizen.
Expanded Background Checks with Mandatory Waiting Periods
Form 4473 of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms within the Department of Justice needs to be expanded to encompass additional pressing questions about areas of concern.
Due to several fatal errors within the NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System) -- including, but not limited to, the sale of weapons to disqualified buyers that resulted in the killings at Sutherland Spring, Texas and Charleston, South Carolina -- a mandatory waiting period needs to be set in motion to help account for input errors and to provide time to reaffirm data entries.
Reformatting of NICS and Form 4473 to Close Loopholes
This is not about banning guns outright. This is, instead, ensuring that we do all within our power to prevent gun sales to those who would do harm to themselves or to others.
The outrageous and numerous loopholes within Form 4473 and within the NICS are a matter of national security and must be closed.
Mandatory Annual Background Check for Gun License Renewal
The background check will be run through ATF annually with updated information to prevent gun ownership by those convicted of crime and by those whose mental ability and/or personal responsibility are in question.
Once every three years, those wishing to renew their gun licenses must present a note from a licensed mental health professional with no ties to the gun industry or gun lobby.
Increase Minimum Age for Rifle and Long-Gun Ownership to 21
If you are not old enough to buy a beer at a gas station, you should not be able to purchase a rifle. The minimum age for buying a pistol is 21; why should the minimum for buying a deadlier weapon be lower?
Overturn PLCAA: the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act
Gun manufacturers should be held to the same strict standards to which our nation holds other merchants of death. The case Lukacs v. Philip Morris, for example, held three tobacco companies liable for the adverse effects to their consumer. Why should not firearms companies be held accountable for the daily slaughter of our friends and neighbors?
Block the passage of CCR: Concealed Carry Reciprocity
This NRA-sponsored legislation would mandate that a state recognize a Concealed Carry Permit from another state. That means that someone with a CCP from a state with lax laws -- one that does not conduct adequate background checks or require safety training -- would be lawfully allowed to carry a concealed weapon in a state with strict laws.
One Step at a Time: State-by-State Legislation
Stricter Concealed Carry Legislation
Using Connecticut as a model, we will urge our state congresspeople to pass stricter gun legislation targeting loopholes.
